After receiving his degree, he interned at Country Workshops in Marshall, N.C., gathering information about green woodworking and hand tools, and learning primitive skills and handwork through his friendship with Cherokee elder Martha Owl. In 1997 he apprenticed with chairmaker John Brown, then moved to Maine to learn wooden boatbuilding. He has worked as a cabinetmaker doing custom commercial woodworking and builds chairs and furniture on commission.
